What is it?

Over the last month and on, the Planning 10 classes at Seycove Secondary have been doing a unit called the Ubuntu unit. The idea behind this unit is to engage our kids in service type activities to in order to teach them about the idea of citizenship, the importance of community, service to others, self-efficacy, goal setting, grade wide communication through a large scale project as well as a sense of belonging through an organized service activity. The Ubuntu unit has been recognized by the BC School Trustees Association, The North Vancouver School District and highlighted on several different media outlets across the province.

In past years various classes have taken on several areas which needed help. During 2004-2005 Tsunami grade 10 students raised close to five thousand dollars for the Red Cross and collected over six thousand cans of food for the Salvation Army Harbour Light Center. Other classes have contributed to community clean ups and anti graffiti clean up groups. Last years grade ten class raised over twenty thousand dollars for the Mother Child center in Kitgum Uganda to help the victims of sex slavery and civil war. These have served as powerful lessons for everyone involved as you can imagine.

This years ubuntu challenge will be for victims of the AIDS pandemic in Africa - helping ordinary people affected by the AIDS pandemic offered through the Stephen Lewis Foundation.
